Do you tell yourself the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth?

Do you tell yourself the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth?

At first you might say YES or course I do. What would be the point in lying to myself?

And I would be first to agree I tell myself the truth.

But when we start to examine the words we use, the thoughts we have and the way in which we respond to situations, we start to uncover a whole web of lies.

The thing is we do lie to ourselves, often. We don’t mean to. In-fact we don’t even know we are doing it half the time and we don’t it in good faith.

When was the last time you told yourself you can't do something?

Or that XYZ wasn’t for people like you.

Or maybe you’ll always be this way its just how it is?

These words, these, thoughts, these responses to situations are lies.

Anxiety Breakthrough FormulaI used to tell myself; I’d always have difficulty ordering food in a restaurant. I couldn’t bear the thought of someone judging my food choices and I’d often say “I’ll have the same thanks”. And then hope they wouldn’t look at me whilst I was eating it.

If I had to make an important phone call or an appointment, I’d put it off feeling scared of talking on the phone and getting it wrong or sounding daft.

When shopping I’d get hot waiting in line to pay and have to check my money ten times over before handing it over.

Getting hotter and hotter, flush in the face.

I’d be overly self-aware in public places.

And die if had to walk past people I didn’t really know in the corridors at work. Crossing my arms, or closing my shoulders, lowering my face. If I couldn’t see them, they couldn’t see me, right?

And crowded spaces were to be AVOIDED at all costs. I’d feel the panic rise up in me. The shortness of breath, the increased heart rate and the panicked wide eyes. Silent tears, and my thoughts in my head telling me to get out of there.

I’d come up with excuses to get out social situations or I’d go the other way and over prepare for every possible scenario. Details planned to a T.

My imagination used to be permanently on over drive, coming up with social situations and highlighting just awfully they’d be and how embarrassing it would be.

And it felt like the truth.

Like life would always be like this for me.

I had accepted from an early age and believed that this was my life.

Of course none of it was true. Nobody cared what I ate in the restaurant, they were too busy thinking about themselves.
And the lady on the other end of the phone just wanted to book the appointment correctly and move on with her busy work schedule.

I always paid with the right money and never took longer than was necessary so my panic at the till was uncalled for.
The crowded rooms and corridors, the social situations were just full of people going about their business, In all honestly, they probably never even noticed me.

So WHY did I and do people experience life in this way?
Why do we tell ourselves it's not okay to into a crowded room and talk to people we don’t really know.

Why do we spend our valuable time creating embarrassing scenarios in our minds and setting ourselves up to fail at the first hurdles, or in many cases not even getting off the starting blocks?

There is no pleasure in it. There is nothing to gain from it. Its just a way of being they somewhere along the line we accepted to be a truth for us.

The tension, the feeling blue, the panic attacks, the demotivation, the being held back, the tears, the quickness of breath, the red face, the stutter, the avoidance. It was all based on a lie.

Now this is the truth and you may find to hard swallow I know I did.

I argued at first.

But that panic attack was real. I felt it with every part of my body and was drained for days afterwards.
My face did burn and my words didn’t come out when I tried to speak.

Tears did silently roll down my face when I dashed out of the event and shut myself in the ladies, that feeling of panic did wash over me like an uncontrollable wave and I found it hard to breath.

These things did happen they were real. My anxiety, my panic and struggles were real.

And yes, those symptoms are real. These situations really did happen, that’s no lie BUT the trigger for them wasn’t real. The trigger for them came from the lies I had continually told myself. These lies were hidden in my words, my thoughts, and my beliefs and became bedded in my life through my actions.

Seriously, I created my anxiety through the misuse or I could even go so far as to say abuse of my imagination. YES the symptoms were real. There is no denying that but the cause was my imagination.

I can’t begin to tell you how I felt when I worked that out. It was a mixture of freedom, because if I had created it, I could learn how to un-create it. Now that excited me BUT god I felt stupid having wasted so many opportunities and avoided so many social situations because I thought I only ever told myself the truth.

The thoughts we have are ours to own and use as we wish too. Sometimes it’s easy than others, sometimes our thoughts are heavily influenced by external factors and sometimes we just don’t want to see the real truth.

Why am I telling you this?

Well I believe that if you can develop good self-understanding you can achieve all the things you want to in your life. If you have a good self insight you live an empowered life, one that doesn’t leave you at the mersey of others, one were you don’t have to blame other people, situation or things and one were you can be free to enjoy every moment.

Well almost every moment, this is life after all.

Can you relate?

Back to School With Confidence

It's that time of year again.  Time to buy the school shoes, label the uniform and get to bed early, ready to rise and shine.

Some children fall back into this routine easier than others.

As a Mother of two very different children I know first hand just how easy and how hard this time of year can be.  School anxiety doesn't just affect your child but has a knock on effect on the whole family.  I've also experienced this time and time again over the last 10 years working with families in schools and as a professional therapist in private practice.

To take the pressure off, and ease your family back into the school routine one of things  you can do is use our hypnotherapy MP3's.

Our Positively Blooming Kids collection of MP3'shave been written and produced by me, Sarah, I'm just a mum like you who has tried her hardest to get things right, remembered the trip money in the morning, had to manage being in two places at once, go to work, keep a happy home, solve all the issues that arise in the family and hang on to her identity, all whilst worrying that she might have gone out with her skirt still tucked in her knickers!

Sound familiar?

Well maybe its just me who worries about the skirt thing....

I guess what I'm trying to say is that its not always easy being a mum and when we worry about something our child is going through that worry can very quickly get bigger. Especially when there is emotion involved and yes there can be bucket loads of emotion when it involves our off spring.

Sometimes things go beyond our control and we feel quite powerless to make it better and that's our primary role isn't it? And when you can't kiss this one better, just like you did when your child had a little graze on their knee, you feel like a failure and on top of all that the darn problem is still there. And your beautiful baby, yes baby even if he/she does tower over you now, they still need a little bit of help.

Now you feel guilty, powerless to help, you've tried just about everything and still this 'thing' is still there....well now you can STOP...take a big long slow deep breath and RELAX because the Positively Blooming Kids MP3 downloads are effective, easy to use, fun to listen to...and can be used over and over again or just when its needed.

After searching high and low for a solution, congratulations you just found it. After years and years of working as hypnotherapist, psychotherapist and in a primary school. I have combined my knowledge and come up with a series of MP3 downloads to take the edge of everyday issues our children face, like school anxiety, fussy eating, bed wetting, exam nerves, nail biting and building self esteem & confidence.

Along with this we offer a series of 1-2-1 sessions to support you and your family through difficult times.  These sessions are now delivered by me and my colleagues in Essex, London, Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire so no matter what your child’s worries are, together we can resolve them.

So lets put those worries aside and build a confident child...

Exam Confidence for The Eleven Plus, GCSE or A-Level

Some children thrive when under pressure where as some just buckle under due to the stress and strain that builds up as that important exam or test date approaches.

Nerves can set in before an exam or test due to anticipatory anxiety, usually there is a lot riding on the results and the imagined scenarios of what will happen if I pass or fail can often be worse than sitting the test or exam itself.

Worrying about the exam content, the time pressure and the fear of staring blankly at the page can can cause undue stress and in turn will not show your child's true capabilities to shine through.

This leads to frustration making them feel like the whole thing could be a wast of time, rather than enjoying the chance to show case their knowledge and capabilities.

Symptoms suffered can vary from person to person but mostly include;

  • Anxiety in the run up to the test or exam
  • Butterflies in you tummy
  • Feeling or being sick
  • Dry mouth
  • Trembling hands whilst writing
  • Your mind going blank when recalling answers
  • Fear of speaking in front of examiners in an oral exam
  • Repeatedly feeling the need to wee

If your child suffers any or all of these things they can bring untold pressure and quite often it's down to lack of confidence and belief in themselves when under pressure.

Self Esteem And Confidence Building for Mums And Mums-to-be

Self Esteem And Confidence Building for Mums And Mums-to-be

Take part in this exercise to see how different those evaluations are, the bigger the difference the more we can build your self esteem.

How do you view yourself?

No honestly, how do you view yourself?

Make a note, a few lines, a paragraph, fill the page.

Now read it, back what does it say?

Do others view you the same way?

The answer is probably NO.

Its really easy for us to view ourselves in a negative light. It's easy to see our flaws, our imperfections, all those things we dislike about ourselves that others rarely see.

Now give yourself an appraisal, just like your manager would at work. Write it down. Now read it, back what does it say?

Compare the two and tell me Is your view of yourself honest? distorted? positive? negative? supportive?

The bigger the discrepancy between how you view yourself and how others view you the lower your self esteem is likely to be.

Your self esteem does need to be really low for you to start feeling out of control. For you to start feeling anxious. For you to start being held back in your life, your work and your relationships.

Your self esteem is how you view yourself, not how others see you. Your self esteem has to come from within.

Let me explain why.

Now I have a lovely husband, he is very kind and supportive BUT if he tells me I'm lovely or I look nice in that outfit and I feel like rubbish, I won't listen.

I won't believe what he says

I'll dismiss it.

I go with my own thoughts, after all they are stronger, more reliable, more predictable.

So if I think I look rubbish and then i'll feel rubbish regardless of what he ( or anyone else) says.

Supposing I did listen to him, well relying on others to lift yourself esteem won't help you long term. Only ever in the moment.

So its good I don't rely on him (or anyone else) for my self esteem, what if he wasn't there one day or was so busy he didn't compliment me.

Where would that leave me?

Self esteem has to come from within, you need to view yourself positively, be supportive, be kind and process all that you do. Even when you don't get the outcome you think you want.

Your self esteem needs to be constantly charged up, just like the battery on your phone. You easily keep that charged without thinking about it too much don't you?

That's what I want you to be doing with your self esteem. Keep topping it up like that battery on your phone until it becomes second nature to you.

Here's one thing you can do everyday.

Everyday from now on make sure you process the effort you've put in to your day.

Whether that be being on time for school, work or college. Planning your meals and packing your lunch. Answering your emails and making those calls. Getting on top of the ironing and walking the dog.

Process it, process it all.

Sarah

Let’s talk about sleep and insomnia…

Let's talk about sleep and insomnia...

Do you agree or disagree to these statements ?

1. I need 8 hours of sleep to feel refreshed and function well during the day.

2. When I don't get the proper amount of sleep on a given night, I need to catch up on the next day by napping or on the next night by sleeping longer.

3. I am concerned that chronic insomnia may have serious consequences on my physical health.

4. I am worried that I may lose control over my abilities to sleep.

5. After a poor night’s sleep, I know that it will interfere with my daily activities on the next day.

6. In order to be alert and function well during the day, I believe I would be better off taking a sleeping pill rather than having a poor night’s sleep.

7. When I feel irritable, depressed, or anxious during the day, it is mostly because I did not sleep well the night before.

8. When I sleep poorly on one night, I know it will disturb my sleep schedule for the whole week.

9. Without an adequate night’s sleep, I can hardly function the next day.

10. I can’t ever predict whether I’ll have a good or poor night’s sleep.

11. I have little ability to manage the negative consequences of disturbed sleep.

12. When I feel tired, have no energy, or just seem not to function well during the day, it is generally because I did not sleep well the night before.

13. I believe insomnia is essentially the result of a chemical imbalance.

14. I feel insomnia is ruining my ability to enjoy life and prevents me from doing what I want.

15. Medication is probably the only solution to sleeplessness.

16. I avoid or cancel obligations (social, family) after a poor night’s sleep.

If you agreed with more than a few of these statements get in touch and lets arrange a time to chat because we can improve your insomnia is just a few sessions.

Pregnancy Insomnia affects 79% of expectant Mums and can affect them throughout all three trimesters. Sleep disorders are among the most widespread major problems experienced in pregnancy. Pregnancy Insomnia is when you have difficulty sleeping or you're not getting enough sleep when you have the opportunity to do so. Pregnancy Insomnia can be experienced in different ways.

You could be suffering from Pregnancy Insomnia if your symptoms include:

  • Difficulty getting to sleep; finding it hard to nod off at night time
  • Difficulty getting to sleep; finding it hard to nod off at night time
  • Interrupted sleep or disturbed sleep. Awaking from sleep in the middle of the night; and sometimes finding it hard to get back to sleep.
  • Awaking from sleep too early, and being unable to get back to sleep
  • Not feeling refreshed by sleep – this is usually due to a disturbed sleeping pattern.
  • Not being able to concentrate the next day due to a lack of sleep
  • Feeling fatigued due to disturbed sleep
  • Feeling irritable due to a lack of sleep

What are the causes of insomnia?

The main causes of insomnia are stress, anxiety, depression and excessive worry. Sometimes the insomnia only lasts for a short spell perhaps a few weeks ( this is called transient insomnia); in other more severe cases the insomnia or sleep difficulty can last for an extended period of time, perhaps months or even years (this is often referred to as chronic insomnia).

In many cases Insomnia can be maintained even after the initial cause of the stress and anxiety has passed. Once our sleep pattern is interrupted the insomnia or difficulty sleeping can become a focal point for anxiety, and the harder a person tried to get off to sleep, the less they are able to do so.

Pregnancy is one of the most important periods in your life. Despite pregnancy being a natural phenomenon, it is accompanied by many major changes, physically, emotionally, mentally and socially. These unknown and at times, uncontrollable changes, can create fears, worries and anxious thoughts in our minds. These thoughts set off the stress response in our bodies and that stress response further aggravates those anxious thoughts. Before you know it you are caught up in cycle that seems impossible to break.

High stress levels in pregnancy can:

  • Shorten your sleep duration
  • Produce poor sleep
  • Increase the time spent awake at night

Poor sleep can be common in pregnant women throughout all three of the trimesters. Each trimester can bring about a new set of concerns or magnify those that are already there. The knock on effect of poor sleep feeds in to your day-to-day stress levels and you can easily find yourself in habitual cycle, feeling helpless to break it.

Evidence indicates that serve loss of sleep in pregnancy can be associated with adverse pregnancy outcome such as:

  • Prenatal depression
  • Gestational diabetes
  • Pre-eclampsia
  • Abnormal length of labor
  • Cesarean delivery
  • Alteration in fetal growth
  • Preterm birth

Lack of ability to sleep throughout pregnancy can be avoid by reducing your fears, worries and anxious thoughts. You can reduce your symptoms by using purposeful hypnosis. Hypnosis like many other products and services out their provides a 'sticky plaster' and reduces the symptoms but does not deal with the cause.

Our Complete Guide to Hypnobirthing contains MP3's that will assist you with you sleep. Our hypnobirthing MP3's focus on relaxation and re-framing your thoughts for a more relaxed and comfortable nights sleep. .

Alternatively, you can deal with the root cause of you anxiety and eliminate anxious thoughts from your mind for good with The Anxiety Breakthrough Formula which incorporates a framework from CBTi.
